can you get an STI from sharing sex toys?

By Anissa Lozano, OkaySo Intern

This is a super common question and there are multiple parts to the answer. Short answer is if a sex toy is used by someone with an STI and not cleaned properly then yes, the sex toy in question can pass on the STI.

Sex toys are usually made out of materials that can be categorized either as porous or nonporous and it's super important to clean them thoroughly as instructed between each use.

If someone is sharing a sex toy that is porous, it is not only important to clean these properly, it is also a good idea to put a condom over them too when using in a new area or by a different person.

Porous means SUPER tiny holes (think of it like the pores on our skin) and sometimes this material can hold onto quite a few things like bacteria, dust, and skin cells even after washing it.

If sharing a sex toy that is nonporous (like made out of glass) it is still important to clean these properly as well between uses as well. If you have any questions or want to chat further with one of our health experts, download our app today!
